A woman surnamed Zhang, of Guiyang, the capital of southwest China's Guizhou province,recently got the key to her new house. But she had a new worry: the price of decorating herhouse was too high. With little experience, she had no idea how to bargain.

She had heard of professional bargainers before she contacted one named Xiaotan, whohelped her save 2,500 yuan ($391) in 32,000 yuan ($5,003) of decorating costs. Zhang endedup saving 2,000 yuan ($313) after she paid Xiaotan a 20% service charge.

In Guiyang, there are quite a few such professional bargainers. Some of them even set upbargaining networks and groups. They provide a wide range of services, including buying cars,furniture, property and wedding services.

"We use the 'on-site group buying bargain' model, which means we organize a group ofcustomers who need decorating materials, furniture, electric appliances and other things andthen we together negotiate with providers in those fields before a favored price can bereached," said Zhou Xin, another professional bargainer in Guiyang.

"Meanwhile, customers can protect their rights in groups if there are disputes in products orservices. This way the disputes can be resolved more smoothly," Zhou added.

Not all customers share the same view of bargainers as Zhang. A woman surnamed Wang, whois also engaged in decorating a new house in the same city, has little interest in bargainers.

"I'd rather learn about decorating on the Internet and bargain by myself. If the bargainers andsellers had agreements under the table, customers will pay for it in the end."

Analysts say that the emergence of bargainers and group buying networks reflect the irregularprice and imbalanced sale information in some fields. The new industries will help priceadjustments, and meanwhile, proper regulation is needed in competitive areas.

Mediator beaten to death on train

A middle-aged man was beaten to death on the train when he tried to mediate a quarrelbetween a passenger and three train stewards, Jiangxi TV reported Tuesday.

A total of 20 passengers on the Shenzhen-Hefei K256 train bore witness and submittedtestimony with their signatures and fingerprints, the report said.

According to a female passenger surnamed Lai, the incident took place at 00:05 at Ganzhourailway station in Jiangxi province. A passenger next to her was quarreling with train stewardson the No 15 car, and another man came to make peace between them, when a train vendorsuddenly stormed in from the No 14 car and held the mediator's neck and beat him through thecars. During the altercation, the mediator may have been hit on his temple.

Three stewards, including a man in a conductor's uniform, hit the mediator, and by the time theambulance arrived, the man was already dead, Lai said.

Killer 'motivated by dream' snared after 17 years on run

A fugitive who went on the run 17 years ago after killing someone "because of a dream" hasbeen apprehended.

Zhang Hualin, from Pengzhou in Sichuan province, woke from a nap on Aug 22, 1992, afterhaving dreamed that he was running away from someone who wanted to harm him.

He then became aware that the son of his divorced girlfriend, Zheng Bin, was standing over himand demanding that he get out of the room. The situation quickly developed into a fight.

Fueled by the fear of his dream, Zhang got a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Zheng todeath.

To escape punishment, he fled to the city of Linzhou in Central China's Henan province andworked as a litter collector.

"If it were not for my dream, I might not have been so impulsive," the killer told police during hisconfession.

Mother has nowhere to turn for daughter's operation

A mother who raised three children on her own is now desperate to save one from leukemia.

"My daughter needs to have a bone marrow transplant and doctors told me that they had foundsuitable bone marrow from Taiwan for her operation, but I could not pay for the operation," saidGu Bixing, a farmer in Zengcheng city, Guangdong province.

The operation requires about 300,000 yuan ($47,000) but the mother had only 130,000 yuan.

The mother and daughter are waiting for help.

Moon Festival shines bright for moneyless American

An young American man who had run out of money in Wuhan, Hubei province, got a free airticket to Beijing as well as a moon cake from the airport police on Sept 11, one day before theChinese Mid-Autumn Festival.

Kelvin, who came from California, arrived in the city by plane on Sept 10.

The young man, who has strong interest in China and the Chinese language, originally plannedto find a job in the city as an English teacher.

However, he was soon running out of cash and his credit card could not be used. He could noteven afford an air ticket to fly to Beijing to get help from the US embassy.

After learning about his situation, several policemen in the Wuhan Tianhe International Airportused their own money to buy a ticket for him.

Kelvin also got a moon cake as a gift from the police, which he said was the first one he had inhis life.

Bad prognosis for cheaters at cancer hospital

Hospital conmen have been cheating patients with potentially fatal diseases at a Hubeiprovincial cancer hospital in Wuhan.

A resident who took his 58-year-old mother to the hospital was stopped by a man who said hewas a security guard and told them to get advice from a professor.

The resident, however, was aware that the two men were con artists and reported them to thehospital.

Police officer hurt pushing suspect from car's path

A suspected car thief, who was pushed out of the way of an oncoming car by a police officer,left his savior in agony and went on the run.

Security officers in Rizhao, Shandong province, received a report about stolen vehicles from acompany on Aug 30 and apprehended a suspect, while two others escaped.

Three days later, officers Qin Kai and Pan Hao caught the other two. However, as they tookthem to their car, a vehicle charged them. Qin pushed a suspect away and was hit, receivingfractures to his legs.

The suspect took his chance to flee, while Pan controlled the other suspect and called for anambulance.

Qin has received praise for his bravery.

Villager sells off long, dark hair to provide for family

A woman in Liaocheng, Shandong province, whose hair is longer than 1.6 meters, has decidedto sell it for 10,000 yuan ($1,500).

Ji Shuangshuang, 23, started growing her hair when she was 15 years old. Since then, she haswashed and protected her dark hair with shampoo and conditioner, as well as leaf juice fromher family's sesame crop.

To take care of her 2-month-old child, Ji and her husband want to sell the hair to raise money. "It takes me two hours to wash my hair, and I have no time now after I have a baby," Ji said.

"The long hair I kept for eight years is something precious to me and my husband and I wantedto sell it at a valuable price."

However, staff members at nearby wig shops say the price is unreasonable and are offeringonly 2,000 yuan.

This engine really purrs like a kitten under the hood

A cat that climbed up into the axis of a car went for a free ride in Beijing recently.

A local resident surnamed Tan had just driven away and reached an intersection when heheard the sound of mewing from below the vehicle.

When he checked out the strange noise he found the cat stuck in the wheel rotation axis.

It took some 30 minutes for firefighters to remove the front wheel of the car and rescue the cat,who survived without injury.

Store fines cleaner after he enjoys loose piece of fruit

A supermarket in Beijing is attempting to fine a company 5,000 yuan ($780) after one of itsemployees ate a grape.

The 53-year-old worker, surnamed Qin, was sent to the store to clean the toilets in May andwas asked to sweep the fresh produce section.

At about 6:30 pm on Aug 29, he found some grapes on the shelf and ate one.

"I thought it was a waste to throw them away like trash, so I took one," Qin said. Managers atthe store, who saw footage of the incident recorded by a video monitor, argued Qin was guiltyof stealing.

The supermarket faxed the cleaning company on Sept 1 demanding compensation.

On Sept 7, both sides ended their partnership.

Xiong Liesuo, a lawyer, said the fine is too high and that, according to Chinese law, anycompensation should be only 30 percent of the good's price.

Video exposes street beggars as frauds

A netizen disclosed on the popular Chinese forum Mop.com that a beggar in Beijing's commercialcenter Xidan was actually a millionaire who owns several properties and four cars, causing asensation on the Internet.

Other netizens replied on the post that they saw this beggar many times with his frantic way ofbegging - kneeling on the ground and continuously kowtowing to get people's sympathy andmoney while an old woman who appears to be seriously ill lies beside him.

The fraud was also found at Dongsishitiao Subway Station in Beijing. A netizen namedBudangxiaobing said an old woman with gray hair was lying on the ground with a boy kowtowing,then suddenly jumped up and ran away because chengguan, or urban management officers,were coming.

The chengguan in charge of Xidan area said the man was found begging on the street severaltimes and he was persuaded to leave. But later he kept evading the officers, escaping every timethe chengguan patrols got close.

"We don't know how much he earns, and we have no legal jurisdiction to fine him either," said anofficer from Xidan's urban management department.

The post, attracting 100,000 hits, said the man could earn up to 4,000 yuan per hour, but thatamount was highly suspect.

The beggars fled in haste when they found themselves being recorded. And to everyone'ssurprise, the woman lying on the ground actually walked like a normal person, according to thevideo uploaded to Ku6.com.
